
The Hal Jones Outstanding Public Service Award
The Hal Jones Outstanding Public Service Award is an initiative by the Geneva Institute for Leadership and Public Policy (GILPP) to honor civil servants, specifically from emerging economies, who demonstrate exceptional leadership, integrity, and a commitment to improving the lives of the most vulnerable in their communities and society as a whole.
Laureates are invited, all expenses paid, to Geneva, Switzerland to participate in the next GILPP Conference where they will receive the award and speak to the conference delegates.
Eligibility
- Nominees must be legislators or civil servants, especially those from emerging economies, who embody the highest ideals of public service. They must use their positions to improve the lives of others, especially the vulnerable, and display exceptional leadership skills. Nominees must demonstrate integrity, wisdom, and a commitment to ethical governance. They are leaders who leave a legacy of transformation for the good of their communities and nations.
- The award is open to individuals from all areas and levels of public service
- The award is open to both current and former civil servants
- Self-nominations will not be accepted
Evaluation Criteria: Demonstration of Servant Leadership and Legislative Impact
- Servant Leadership: Nominations must include concrete examples of the nominee’s excellent leadership qualities. Stories are encouraged.
- Key Legislation and/or Programs: Additionally, nominations must include key legislation and/or programs to which the nominee has contributed which further the cause of the vulnerable in their country. Tangible, measurable results stemming from said legislation and/or program should be included. If the goal remains unattained, then highlight their tenacious, lifelong dedication to championing the cause.
Selection Process
A diverse committee of experts will review nominations based on the outlined criteria. The selection process will involve:
- Reception of nominations detailing the nominee’s qualifications
- Review of supporting letters from individuals who can attest to the nominee’s character and contributions
- Evaluation of the nominee’s impact on their community and beyond
- Final deliberation by the award committee to determine the winner
